Bo Stiemer (2000)
Artist, Filmmaker & Researcher
Works in Utrecht, The Netherlands & Melbourne, Australia
Wounded landscapes speak to me. They teach me about kinship, ecology, and community. My practice is site-specific. I aim to listen to and amplify the voice of the Land and her custodians. Because of the political nature of the landscapes I address, my work holds violence, resistance, and softness in tension.
I am a storyteller, artistic researcher, and filmmaker, and express myself primarily through video, sound, and installation. I address themes such as ecocide, colonialism, and family. As a Dutch artist, I recognise that I come from a country with a colonial legacy, and my practice begins from that position. I am concerned with uncovering stories that systems of oppression attempt to bury. Everything I make is relational: co-creation and friendship are focuspoints within my practice. I work closely with Aboriginal Elders, lawholders, fellow activists, and grassroots organisations. Care for the people I work with and the Land I work on underpins anything I create.
